Steam Railway Heritage [Box Set], at Woolworths
Brecon Mountain Railway: This documentary tells the story of two railway companies. The first is 'The Brecon Mountain Railway', which opened as a heritage railway in June 1980, it's new narrow gauge track having been laid over part of the original track bed of the second company we shall be taking a look at, that is the 'Brecon and Merthyr Tidfil Junction Railway Company'. The BMR new line runs from Pant Station nearly up to the now disused Summit, or Torpantau tunnel which at 1313ft was the highest ever built in the country. In it's day the Brecon and Merthyr northern section had been called the most spectacular in the land, it's passengers having had the opportunity of seeing magnificent views from their windows as the companies old locomotives struggled at the head of their charges as they pulled them over steep gradients of up to 1-38 that took the trains across the mountains, through the valleys, and past the two great reservoirs that lay between Brecon and Merthyr. Dean Forest Railway: To make this programme we visited the Dean Forest Railway which winds its way through the picturesque Royal Forest in Gloucester. On visiting the line at best station to start your journey from is the lines HQ at Norchard, from here, leaving from the low level platform you can take a return trip by steam or diesel hauled train through Lydney Town, St. Mary's Halt to Lydney Junction. On returning to Norchard you can then take a further journey from the high level platform to by a Diesel Multiple Unit to Whitecroft. Soon this part of the line will be extended to Parkend. If you don't break your journey the two trips should take about ninety minutes. At the DFR there is plenty to see and the surroundings are picturesque and tranquil. The Severn Valley Railway: The Severn Valley Railway with its 16 miles of reopened track is one of the longest Heritage Railways in the country today, running between its two terminuses Kidderminster and Bridgnorth through one of the most picturesque valleys in the West Midlands. While looking at pictures of the Railway as it is today, this documentary tells the story of the history of the SVR, from it's conception to it's opening in 1862, to it's final closure in 1963 as another casualty to Beeching.
